A big spout of rain

Flashback to beginning of December last year, no one in Melbourne was anticipating the rainfall that we received.

At Elmswood, we had 100-150ml of rain. Thankfully, nothing was damaged and the rain will set us up well for the rest of vintage since we are a non-irrigated vineyard. However, it could also mean extra growth in the canopies so a lot more growth in the grass, equalling more work. The silver lining is that the downpour came right at the end of flowering, and thankfully did not affect flowering but it might affect the fruit set a little bit so we are keeping a close eye on it.

Additionally, we have to remain extremely vigilant on disease in the vineyard, particularly botrytis, to ensure it doesn’t develop inside our grape bunches.
